The End of the World... and Kenny G

The world must have ended and He-double hockey sticks must have frozen over because tonight the Odom4 went to see Kenny G.  We usually listen to Kenny G only during the winter because his chirstmas album is nice, but tonight we got some free tickets (worth 600,000 Won), and decided that we would HAVE to go.   Love this sign, all in Korean except the ing.  What's up with that? 
 Side note, in Korea it is not the end of the world today, because there are not many christians here, so they were all carrying on with life as usual :) 

Can you guess who's stage this is?  Yes, Kenny G.  I wonder if he got his name like Preparation H did? 

Here we are in the audience.  The one nice thing about this place is there are no squid vendors inside the place, so the air is much fresher.

Here is Kenny G doing his thing.  Interesting side note... if you are not a Kenny G fan, it seems as if he is playing the same song over and over and over.  Each song sounded vaguely familiar, and it was like, have I heard this song before tonight, or is this the song I just heard 20 seconds ago?

Daegu National Muesum National Geographic Exhibit

Today we went to the Daegu National Muesum, which is currently housing an exhibit of National Geographic photographs.  The museum is really amazing, but, as luck would have it we arrived at the same time as a tour bus full of students, so the calm you see here did not last long.

Of course, you don't get the "real life" experience of looking at the photos while all the people look at you, pointing, and saying "Meegook saram"... American.  It might be better for you... sigh...

The museum also has several exhibits of Korean history and culture.  Here a crayon rubbing is made.  Big Daddy had to wait in line, just like the kids, and he was so proud!

OK, I think I have a problem... I was like, Oh, look at their shoes... and then I tried to find a pair to buy online... but the first step is admitting  you have a problem, right?  And you can't find shoes bigger than a size 7 here... I am DYING!

Had to take a picture of this, which shows that "females spent a substantial part of their daily life with 'seven friends' in a workbox: needle, thread, thimble, scissors, ruler, iron. and long-handled smoother." 



A photo of the seven friends.  This exhibit prompted a lot of discussion and feminist debate, and so we decided to come up with our own lists:
Big Daddy: Dental floss, e-mail, toilet paper with aloe, huggies wipes, cell phone, little brown notebook (free from pizza hut in Beijing) and soju.
R-Man: legos, toilet, television, Captain Underpants books, teddy bears, computer, and soccer ball.
Pooks: TV, tigers, Barbies, basketball, jar to hold critters, running track, and Tom and Jerry movies.
Me: Coffee, Facebook, e-mail, coffee, running shoes, water, and beer.
Thank god times have changed, and mine and pooks aren't needle and thread!



Again, these exhibits said no photos, but there weren't any guards and we needed some photos for here.  These were some of the exhibits of ancient Korean culture.  A Buddhist gong.

Lotte Mall Grand Opening

Our school is in a new section of Daegu knows as Esiapolis.  The school was the first thing built, and since we have been here there have been 4 more construction projects started:  a clothing and textile design college across the street, a building for and the Daegu Board of Education, another school, and an office park.  When we first arrived in October this mall was still in the shell stage; there was concrete and rebar everywhere.  Well, this past weekend the mall opened.  This giant sculpture marks the entrance way to the mall, which is an outside style mall.  Needless to say, it was packed!

This large float drove around the lower courtyard followed by several large characters.  You can just see Picachu in the background.

The famous Daegu superstars Mickey and Minnie were there.

Two we couldn't identify helped Winnie the Pooh along.

The kids got in line to do face painting.  You should have seen the selections for pace painting.  There were 6 kids ahead of us in line and we waited about one hour for our turn. 

R-Man went with the Wal-Mart low prices guaranteed SMILEY FACE, which took about 11 minutes to paint on his face. 

Pooks got this orange cartoon guy from Korean TV and his pink girlfriend... wait time 24 minutes.  Those in line behind her were not thrilled.

This has to be the most intricate and elaborate face painting we have ever seen.  There were beautiful multi-colored butterflies, rainbows with glittery clouds, black cats, they were AMAZING!  Compare that to the worst face painting- StoryLand, in Glen NH, where you can get a heart or a balloon in about 8 seconds.  They do not mess around there.

This took longer to paint on than it took Pooks to ruin.  In 4 minutes she was crying that a few drops of water got on it.

The center common area.  The mall has many sporting goods shops, tons of expensive clothing shops, a Body Shop, nail salon, movie theater, grocery store, and TGiFridays.

And of course, no Lotte Mall is complete without a Krispy Kreme...
